WB to the Max

I think James Cameron has been watching a little too much of the WB. The previews of his new Fox show Dark Angel caught my attention because the main character strongly resembled Faith, everyone's favorite rebel slayer on Buffy. Not only do they look alike, but the girl on Dark Angel also dresses like Faith and has the same tough attitude. But my first impression that the show was a Buffy rip-off was not quite on target.

Once I saw the pilot, it hit me why everything felt so familiar. I had seen it before -- on Roswell. Here's what I mean:

(Jessica Alba)
Roswell
Dark Angel
  • Main character's name: Max
  • Main character's name: Max
  • Description of main character:
Dark haired and mysterious, with superhuman powers. He was genetically engineered on another planet.
  • Description of main character:
Dark haired and mysterious, with superhuman powers. She was genetically engineered on Earth.
  • Main character's goal:
To find others like himself. This is often emphasized when he stares out into the night sky.
  • Main character's goal:
To find others like herself. This is often emphasized when she stares out into the night sky.
  • Main character's love interest:
A normal human girl who knows Max's secrets and is on his side.
  • Main character's (future) love interest:
A normal human guy who knows Max's secrets and is on her side.
  • The bad guys:
Scary men from the government who want to find him, do research on him and maybe kill him.
  • The bad guys:
Scary men from the government who want to find her, do research on her and maybe kill her.
  • The verdict: Roswell rip-off! But yet I watched it for two hours. Maybe Mr. Cameron knows what he's doing after all. Check it out on Fox, Tuesdays at 9pm. (You can always tape that other Angel over on the WB.) --Lisa Beebe
